Hammond stays hot but Mustangs fall to North Stars in Battlefords
The Melfort Mustangs opened their western road swing on Friday with a 5-3 loss to the Battlefords North Stars.
Melfort outshot the North Stars 31-26 in the contests, and while it felt like a back and forth game, Mustangs’ assistant coach Dan Meyers says they should have played much better.
“I don’t think in the first two periods we came with a lot of effort, we weren’t physical at all,” Meyers said. “Just kind of played with them.”
The Mustangs were down 3-1 heading into the third, with Carter Anderson scoring the lone Melfort goal. Curtis Hammond would bring the game back to 3-2 at the eight-minute mark of the third period, but it only lasted a minute and a half as Battlefords made it 4-2. Hammond put the team on his back once more as he scored his second of the night, and seventh in as many games to make it 4-3 with just over two minutes to play, but that’s as close as the Mustangs would get. Battlefords would score less than a minute later as the final dagger.
