Mustangs looking to get back on the right track in weekend set with Ice Wolves

Feb 11, 2022 | 10:05 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have just 12 games remaining in their regular season before the playoffs kick off in the SJHL.

And for a team that has lost seven of their last nine games, the Mustangs are hoping to get back to playing their best hockey come March. One word that has been used recently has been ‘swagger’, something the Mustangs feel needs to return to their room.

Forward Boston Maxwell says they need to get more physical early, and have fun playing the game and when that happens, they’ll get that swagger back.

“I think everything just starts coming to you,” Maxwell said. “You feel good on the ice, pucks start going on net, pucks start going in, guys are laying hits and staying out of the box. You know you’re doing it well when everyone’s got a smile on their face on the bench.”

A matchup this weekend against the La Ronge Ice Wolves should get the blood pumping for both clubs as the division rivals go head to head.

The season series is tied at two games a piece, but La Ronge has won both of the most recent meetings, both at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.

Friday will also be a homecoming for Mustang forward Nolan Doell who returns to La Ronge for the first time since being traded to Melfort in November. Maxwell, also a former Ice Wolf, says while there are friends on the other side, and La Ronge does hold a special place, it’s all business on Friday.

“It’s a tough battle, they have a tough team,” he said. “You know what it’s going to be like when you go up to that rink up there. It’s tight, it’s physical, and a fast paced game, so if you keep things simple, good things will happen for us.”

La Ronge had a six game win streak broken on Sunday, Feb. 6 in Kindersley, but they did earn a point with the shootout loss, making it seven straight games earning a point. The Ice Wolves are 21-19-1-3 on the year, good for 46 points, and seventh in the SJHL.

Friday nights game can be heard on 105 CJVR with Mat Barret from the Mel Hegland Uniplex in La Ronge. Saturday’s meeting will be at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.
