Weather Whiplash

The northeast can expect freezing temperatures over the long weekend

The northeast is experiencing frigid temperatures, and that trend is not likely to change anytime soon.

With the recent dump of snow that communities across the province got, many are wondering if they need to prepare for an extended winter.

Environment Canada’s Meteorologist Terri Lang explains that there is a jet stream across the middle of Saskatchewan causing fluctuating temperatures.

“Depending on where you are with respect to that jet stream that tells you what you’re going to get. If the jet stream moves a little bit to the north, you get warmer air, and if it moves back south you get into the colder air.”

Weather systems move along jet streams which is what brings in snow, wind and rain. The current weather system is affecting all of the prairie provinces from Cold Lake in Alberta and southern Manitoba.

Lang added the weather pattern we are experiencing is going to continue into the long weekend.

“Another weather system coming through bringing more snow so you will get more snow and some wind, we’re going to kind of get into the cold for a more extended period of time.”

The weather is expected to warm near the end of the month but residents shouldn’t hold out hope for an early spring.

“Even if it warms up, it may get cold again. February’s just one of those times when we can really get into that cold air just because it’s still working up to the north.”

Those travelling for the long weekend should continue to watch the weather frequently as conditions will continue to change.

“So really rapid, warm-up ahead of this weather system coming in, but then it’s going to sweep through, there’s going to be more snow falling,” Lang said. “The winds are going to snap around to the north and the temperatures are really going to play a bit of weather whiplash this weekend.”

Before heading out check the highway hotline to ensure road conditions are safe for travel. Ensure you have an emergency kit in your car and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
