Venne wins first game in over a month as Mustangs down Klippers

Feb 19, 2022 | 9:11 AM

A big night from James Venne helped the Mustangs take down the Kindersley Klippers at the Northern Lights Palace on Friday.

Venne stopped 36 of 37 shots in a 5-1 win for the Mustangs, giving Venne his first win in net in over a month. His last win was on New Years Day against the Nipawin Hawks.

“Just locked in, focused,” Venne said after the game. “Just kept my head in there.”

Trenton Curtis scored with less than a minute to play in the first period to open the scoring for Melfort after what was a back and forth frame between the two clubs that ended with the shots 14-13 for Melfort.

Thomas Moore, Carter Anderson, and Curtis Hammond would all score in the second period to give Melfort a nice 4-0 cushion heading into the third period, a frame that the Mustangs have struggled with as of late, but not in this contest.

Kindersley would push hard, but Venne and the Mustangs held their ground as Venne stopped 12 of the 13 shots he saw in that period, only allowing a late goal to Aidan Bangs. Logan Cox added an empty netter to close things out for Melfort who improves to 26-15-3-5 on the season.

Venne said they played a full 60 minutes and got rewarded.

“Just keeping, being consistent throughout the whole game with no breakdowns,” he said. “It was a huge consistency game for us.”

Melfort will visit the Nipawin Hawks on Saturday. You can hear that game on 105 CJVR with Mat Barrett.
