Storytime makes a comeback

Melfort Public Library brings storytime

Feb 21, 2022 | 8:00 AM

Families in Melfort can soon enjoy in-person storytime at the Melfort library.

As COVID-19 restrictions are removed across the province, the Melfort Public Library is hoping to spread joy with a family favorite activity.

Janice Heavin, the assistant librarian at the Melfort Public Library, told NortheastNOW that the library hopes families can enjoy the activity once again.

“We’re really hoping that parents will be okay with coming into our storytime area which is cozy in there.”

The response to the activity has been excellent, so much so that they are thinking of adding additional storytimes.

Although the activity is making parents and children jump for joy, the librarians are just as happy to have the activity make a comeback.

“We’re so excited to have kids come back, we’ve missed the fun and excitement of having them in the library.”

Three to five-year-olds who participate in the weekly program hear two or three books and enjoy rhymes, songs, and a craft at the end.

The program helps promote literacy for children in the community but Heavin explains storytime is more than just about listening to a book.

“A great way to introduce kids to the library, and hopefully get them hooked on reading. The social side of things too, for the kids and for the parents, I think people are really ready to get back to that.”

During storytime, children will experience a variety of literacy components that aim to help prepare children for kindergarten.

Storytime begins in the first week of March on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. All reading sessions are around an hour in length.
