Mustangs win first road game in over a month, double up on Hounds

Feb 23, 2022 | 8:06 AM

Heading into their game against the Notre Dame Hounds on Tuesday, Feb. 22, the Mustangs had not won on the road since Jan.1 against the Nipawin Hawks.

That six game streak was broken with a 4-2 win over the Hounds at the Duncan McNeill Arena in Wilcox.

“We made mistakes, but I thought everybody, just about, had a real strong effort,” said Mustangs head coach Trevor Blevins. “And that’s what we were looking for in a response from the other night.”

Notre Dame opened the scoring in this one just about four minutes in as Kevin Anderson notched his 23rd goal of the season.

After that, Melfort responded with three unanswered goals as Dawson Leroux tied the game in the first, while Trenton Curtis and Carter Anderson each scored in the second period to give the Mustangs a two goal cushion heading into the third.

Notre Dame got one back with about five minutes to play but it didn’t last long as Nolan Doell would put the Mustangs back up two shortly after, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The Mustangs fired 29 shots towards Hounds netminder Austin Elliott, but the shots only show part of the story as Melfort had a number of chances that didn’t go in, but also didn’t result in goals. Blevins said it was nice to be able to create offence the way they did.

“It was actually pretty to watch at times,” he said. “Just the way we were moving the puck to each other and supporting. We generated a lot of possession time.”

James Venne stopped 27 of 29 in the win for Melfort.

Melfort improves to 26-15-4-5, good for 63 points, just two back of Flin Flon for third place.

The Mustangs host Kindersley on Friday.
