An announcement Thursday from the Saskatchewan Games Council and the Regina Host Organizing Committee will likely restore a smile to the faces of hundreds of heartbroken young athletes in the province.

New dates have been announced for the Saskatchewan Winter Games – originally scheduled to be held this month but cancelled due to concerns around COVID and rising cases of the Omicron variant.

The games will now be held Feb. 19-25, 2023. In a statement from Valerie Sluth, Chair, Regina Host Organizing Committee, she expressed excitement to begin planning efforts.

“We would like to thank all of our sponsors, stakeholders, and volunteers for their continued support. We look forward to continuing the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Saskatchewan Games in Regina next year,” she said.

The new date was set after consultation with Provincial Sport Organizations (PSO) and the Districts for Sport, Culture and Recreation.

“With the announcement of these new dates, I’m more confident than ever that the Regina Host Organizing Committee will be able to host the Games the way we envisioned by providing a safe and unforgettable experience for the athletes, coaches, volunteers, spectators and sponsors,” Mark Bracken, Saskatchewan Games Council Executive Director said. “The new February 2023 schedule will allow Games participants a greater opportunity to maximize their experience while ensuring the Games provide a full range of sport and cultural experience to all.”

The Saskatchewan Games are one of the largest amateur sporting events in Saskatchewan, with participation from over 2,000 athletes, coaches, and officials and over 1,000 volunteers from every corner of the province.

Held every two years, alternating between summer and winter, the Games provide an opportunity for the province’s developing athletes, coaches, and officials to experience an exciting multi-sport event in preparation for higher levels of competition, including the Canada Games, North American Indigenous Games, the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
