Mustangs taking it one shift at a time as playoffs near

The Melfort Mustangs are getting set for two tough tests this weekend following a big win earlier this week.

Melfort will meet the Kindersley Klippers and the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday and Saturday night respectively.

The Mustangs are coming off a 4-2 win over the Notre Dame Hounds on Tuesday, a game that the team felt was pretty close to a complete performance. Forward Boston Maxwell said the team is trying to keep things light.

“We’re having fun skates, fun practices, we’re keeping the pace up high,” Maxwell said. “Staying loose and making sure we’re taking care of our bodies going into the next couple of games here.”

Maxwell is very familiar with the Klippers and Ice Wolves as he spent some time with both clubs in his prior SJHL seasons.

The Mustangs are also relatively familiar with both teams. Melfort and Kindersley last met exactly a week ago on Friday, Feb. 18 in a 5-1 win for Melfort at the Northern Lights Palace. The Mustangs last saw the Ice Wolves on Feb. 11 and 12 in a home and home set. La Ronge took both games, one in overtime.

With just nine points separating third and sixth place in the SJHL, points this weekend could be huge with just a handful of games remaining. Although, Maxwell said the team is focusing on each game that is presented.

“We try to break it up into blocks, first five, second five, break down the periods,” he said. “And just play in the moment, that’s a really big thing for us, and just keeping our heads in it.”

Melfort is fifth in the SJHL with a 27-15-4-5 record, good for 63 points. Kindersley holds a one-point lead on the final playoff spot with a 23-27-1-1 record, and 48 points. La Ronge is just five points back of Melfort, currently in sixth place with a 27-21-1-3 record.

Friday night’s game is at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort, while Saturday is in La Ronge.
