aaThe Melfort Mustangs are now winners of three straight hockey games after a 4-3 shootout win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Saturday, Feb. 26.

“It was just like a playoff game to me, the atmosphere even was like a playoff game,” said assistant coach Dan Meyers. “Just good to see the boys respond.”

Melfort opened the scoring late in the first period as Tye Scherger scored his sixth of the season to give Melfort the 1-0 lead through one.

However, the Ice Wolves came back hard in the second as Ryley Morgan tied the game almost four minutes into the period, and Brandon Della Paolera scored on a powerplay with less than five minutes to play in the second to give La Ronge the lead.

Zac Somers tied the game for Melfort early in the third period, but La Ronge would respond with a goal from Walker Jerome to give them the 3-2 with about 15 minutes to play.

Melfort would press in that final 15, and finally get rewarded as Marco Lopez scored to tied the game with five minutes to go in regulation.

Overtime would solve nothing, so a shootout would have to decide this one.

Gavin Mattey, Brandon Della Paolera, and Ryley Morgan all missed for the Ice Wolves, while Curtis Hammond and Nolan Doell missed for Melfort. Then, it was Marco Lopez who scored as the Mustangs third shooter, winning the game for the road team.

The win pushes Melfort’s record to 29-15-4-5 on the year, and after Battlefords and Flin Flon lost on Saturday, Melfort is now in a tie for third place with the Bombers with 67 points.

The win was also Melfort’s second shootout win of the year, and first in five chances.

Melfort will see La Ronge again on Wednesday, back at the Northern Lights Palace.
