Mustangs set for last meetings of season against rival Hawks

Mar 4, 2022 | 10:18 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are riding a four game winning streak as they head into their final meeting against the Hawks this season.

Melfort is coming off a 4-1 win over La Ronge on Wednesday and forward Tye Scherger said the team is feeling confident with just four games left to play.

“We’re just sticking to the program,” he said. “Everyone’s buying in and that’s huge at this time in the season.”

Melfort will have a home and home against the Hawks on Friday and Saturday and while the 11th place Hawks won’t be making the SJHL postseason, Scherger and the Mustangs understand that it’s still a rivalry.

“They’re still a hard playing team,” Scherger said. “And they always bring it every weekend, so we’ve got to be ready for that.”

Melfort is 30-15-4-5 on the season and sits with 69 points, tied with the Flin Flon Bombers for third place in the SJHL. However, the Bombers have one game in hand on the Mustangs. The two will play in a home and home next week.

Friday nights game against the Hawks can be heard on 105 CJVR with the voice of the Mustangs, Mat Barrett. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. and the pre-game show is at 7:15 p.m. Meanwhile, Saturday’s game will be at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort and will be free for all to attend.
