Mustangs squeak by Hawks in free game at Palace

In front of 1,300-plus fans at the Northern Lights Palace, the Melfort Mustangs defeated the Nipawin Hawks 4-3 on Saturday.

The Mustangs took an early 2-0 lead but the Hawks would claw their way back to bring the game to 2-2 heading into the third period.

“I think we had some rough patches,” said defenceman Mark Snarr. “But, we kept our heads, played through it, third period was better and we came out with the win.”

For Snarr, along with Lucas Ochitwa, and Boston Maxwell, it was their 100th game in the SJHL. Snarr said it was a good feeling to be able to score and add an assist in the win.

“Yeah it was pretty special to get a goal tonight in front of this big crowd,” he said. “Hopefully we get this crowd in the playoffs and keep it rolling.”

Along with Snarr, Dawson Leroux, Nolan Doell, and Carter Anderson all scored for Melfort in the victory. The Mustangs also outshot the Hawks by more than double, but Harmon Laser-Hume was solid in the Hawks net stopping 35 shots.

The win was Melfort’s sixth in a row and keeps the Mustangs in sole possession of third place in the SJHL.
