Mustangs use strong second period in comeback win against Bombers

Mar 9, 2022 | 9:45 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are two points closer to earning the Sherwood Division crown in the SJHL.

The Mustangs defeated the Flin Flon Bombers on Tuesday night at the Whitney Forum by a 3-2 score. The Mustangs fell behind after the first period as an early goal from Drew Kuzma and a late marker from Mason Kaspick made it 2-0 for Flin Flon.

Mustangs assistant coach Dan Meyers said in the first period, they weren’t hitting and moving their feet like they should have been.

“Give Flin Flon all credit,” Meyers said. “They wanted this game as hard as we did, and they just came out a little hungrier in the first period.”

Things turned in the second period however as the Mustangs would storm back. Logan Cox tipped a Cameron Emigh shot passed Cal Schell to make it 2-1, then it was Trenton Curtis finding a loose puck in the slot to make it 2-2. The Mustangs would then pull ahead with just over five minutes to play in the second as Nolan Doell finished off a nice feed from Ben Tkachuk to make it 3-2 Melfort.

Meyers said the message in the first intermission wasn’t complicated.

“Keep it simple,” he said. “It’s a small rink here. Let’s get over the red line, dump it in, put some bodies on them and then shoot pucks at the net and crash the net.”

The Mustangs would hold off an onslaught by Flin Flon in the third, but they would block shots like crazy throughout the night, and Joel Favreau made 37 saves for his 13th win of the season.

The Mustangs now just need a single point to win the Sherwood Division title for the first time since 2015/2016. They’ll host Flin Flon on Thursday.
