Melfort Unit Comprehensive Collegiate Pink Game raises almost $18,000

Melfort Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) held their annual ‘Pink Game’ and helped raise nearly $18,000.

For the biggest game of the year, the Melfort Comets and the Tisdale Tornados came together, however, it was the community oncology program at Melfort Hospital that came out on top.

Kelly Linnell, coach of the senior girl’s basketball team and an organizer for the Pink Game, told northeastNOW the original event was started by a coach showing kindness to their challenging team.

“They decided to buy uniforms for the team that they had hosted and then they encouraged them to pay it forward.”

Since then host teams have raised money for local organizations and purchased jerseys for the team they are hosting.

“We played against Carlton High in Prince Albert and then it was our job to find another team to play.”

The original game was scheduled to be against Meadow Lake but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they were unable to play. Instead, MUCC played Tisdale but Meadow Lake will still be hosting the 2023 pink game to raise money for their community.

Linnell explained that through various fundraisers, silent auctions and private donations the MUCC girls basketball team was able to present a cheque for $17,887.55 to the Melfort Hospital Community Oncology Program.

“We had businesses in the community and across the province that had donated items for us to raffle off and then we had silent auction items kind of for bigger items.”

Items up for grabs included golfing at Elkridge, homemade quilts, sparkle ball earrings and a signed Roughrider Jersey from Melfort’s own Mattland Riley and Logan Ferland.

According to Linnell, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when the final total came in.

“It just chokes you up, especially after the year we’ve had.”

Linnell wanted to extend her gratitude to everyone who had a hand in making the game so special.

“There are so many people that give so much behind the scenes. You can’t do this project by yourself. You have to have a team and it was phenomenal.”
