Melfort Rotarians helping provide shelter for those in Ukraine

Mar 14, 2022 | 5:00 PM

Melfort Rotary Club is helping to provide temporary shelter for those fleeing from Ukraine.

Rotarians in Melfort are teaming up with ShelterBox, an international disaster relief organization, to assist those losing their homes by providing a temporary place to call their own.

Gailmarie Anderson, chair of Public Relations for the club told northeastNOW they are encouraging everyone to take action and support those fleeing their homes.

“We as a Rotary Club look after the needs of people, both locally and everywhere. We feel a need to step up and support Ukraine during this crisis.”

Each ShelterBox is comprised of a large green tote filled with essential goods for living in times of distress.

Those who receive the box will find a family-sized tent designed to fit up to 10 people, cooking sets, water filtration systems and solar lights. For those with young children, activities kits are also provided.

For those looking to rebuild their homes, each box contains supplies that will help in the restoration process.

Anderson explained the Rotary Club is a non-political organization and despite there being political corruption they want to offer assistance to those who are affected by the crisis.

“We just understand that it’s an emergency situation and we wanted to provide shelter and the essential items to all of these families that have been forced to leave their homes.”

The cost of a single ShelterBox is $1,200. The Rotary Club will be taking donations to contribute towards the purchase of these emergency shelters.

For those wanting to tour a ShelterBox and see what the shelters look like, Anderson explains they are setting one up in the Melfort Mall from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. beginning on March 17 to 19.

“Of course, you know, we just urge people to donate today to provide life-saving aid to the families affected by the crisis.”

Those wanting to donate can visit the ShelterBox set up in the Melfort Mall or e-transfer funds to payment@melfortrotary.org. All donations over $20 will be given a tax receipt.
