New community care home coming to Melfort

The City of Melfort will be home to a new care home for people with disabilities.

At a city council meeting on March 14, Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) was granted discretionary approval for the development of a multi-unit care home and rental unit.

Brian Enge, Community Services councillor told northeastNOW that he is grateful the SHC is bringing these units to the community.

“So this being kind of a niche need in our community, it is so well appreciated that they are proposing to build a new facility in our community on a piece of land that has been underutilized.”

Enge said there was previous interest in the land but this opportunity is something special for members of the community.

“Now this is a much larger organization with Sask. housing. It’s fantastic news.”

The project is set to take place at 300 Bemister Ave E. The project will consist of two residential care homes that can house up to four adults as well as two standard rental units.

Kaitlyn Abel, communications consultant for the Government of Saskatchewan explained the project will be run by a local organization.

“PLUS Industries, a community-based organization, will operate the home,” Able added. “These new residential care home placements will help Melfort families keep their loved ones closer to home.”

Sharon Chetwynd, general manager of Plus Industries explained the development will provide a safe space that is custom to the individuals’ needs.

“Some of the individuals will be supported within the group home, and some will be supported by our supported living department as they are more independent.”

The program is aimed at providing affordable and accessible housing to the community.

“This is something that we’re hoping to continue doing to provide something that can meet their needs.”

Although there is no date for when construction is set to begin, the project is set to be completed by the fall of 2023.
