Broncos seal game five, chance to end series with La Ronge in game six

The Humboldt Broncos picked up the pace last night as they took game five of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League round one playoff series, in front of a roaring Elgar Petersen crowd.

The 4-1 win against the La Ronge Ice Wolves now brings the series to 3-2 with the Broncos having a chance to take it all in game six on Sunday afternoon at the Mel Hegland Uniplex.

Inching closer to those second-round prospects, assistant coach Carter Hansen said they preached the same message to the players that they have consistently throughout the season.

“We got to keep playing our game. We know what they’re gonna do, we know what we got to do and I think we stuck to that and we got to hope for the best at the end of the day.”

Having a rough start this round losing games two and three, Broncos forward James Form told northeastNOW that he is proud of how the team has overcome adversity and emotion to have that round two in sight.

“We expected this series to be going differently. I don’t think we expect to be tied two-two with La Ronge. So when things didn’t go our way, when we realized that we were down in points in scoring, power play, penalty, kill, whatever it may be, it definitely hurt us.”

However, a game six win will be a hard battle as La Ronge will be energized by their own crowd and the Broncos will be preparing for that going in.

Holden Knights kicked off the scoring for game five with a shot on Broncos goalie Rayce Ramsay sneaking in through the five-hole early in the second on the power play.

After that it would be all Broncos.

Taking a beautiful pass from Cage Newans from the corner, Form would answer back from the point beating out Xavier Cannon followed by another with Sam Marburg getting the puck in the zone and Form coming in on the attack. A beautiful slap shot from the blueline from Ethan Zielke would find the back of the net making it 3-1 going into the third.

Both teams would fight hard with La Ronge pulling Cannon for the man advantage but it would not be enough as Nicksha Eric with the shorthanded, empty netter solidified the 4-1 win the buzzer sounded.

Rayce Ramsay “stood on his head” for the Broncos in the third, said Hansen, and it showed. Ramsay stopped 20 out of 21 shots La Ronge fired his way and the Broncos outshot the Ice Wolves with 32 shots on Cannon.

Puck drops on game six at 5 p.m. in La Ronge on Sunday.

In other SJHL action the Notre Dame Hounds will now be fighting for their lives as Estevan is now dominating the series 3-1 with game six tonight. Melfort is fighting for their lives with the Terriers up 3-2 in that series with game six on Sunday. Flin Flon has the game advantage over the North Stars with a 3-2 lead in that series with game six on Sunday.
