Mustangs season ends with heartbreaking loss to Terriers in game seven

Mar 30, 2022 | 9:36 AM

The Melfort Mustangs fought hard but their season has come to a close after a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Yorkton Terriers in game seven of their SJHL quarter-final series.

Melfort led 1-0 after one period on a goal from Curtis Hammond, his third of the playoffs.

However, things turned for the Mustangs in the second period as they were outshot 14-9 in the frame and gave up the tying goal to Erik Boers to make it 1-1 after two and that period seemed to change momentum.

Although Melfort had their fair share of chances, Kael DePape was solid in net, as he was all series for Yorkton. Boers would score another late in the third, and the Mustangs were unable to get the equalizer in the dying minutes of the game.

Defenceman Lucas Ochitwa said it’s a tough one to swallow.

“We had a really special group of boys and, unfortunately, it came down to one period and one goal,” he said. “There’s no words to explain how I’m feeling.”

For Ochitwa, it was his 106th and final game in a Mustang uniform. The three-year defender had nothing but great things to say about his time in Melfort and with the Mustangs.

“The organization has been nothing but good to me, the guys I’ve had on my teams have been nothing but good to me,” Ochitwa said. “Everything about Melfort has been phenomenal.”

Along with Ochitwa, seven other players played their last games of Junior A hockey. Marco Lopez, Seth McCulloch, Tye Scherger, Mark Snarr, Nolan Doell, Carter Anderson and Curtis Hammond are all graduating.

Yorkton will meet Estevan in round two.
