Broncos ready to go for semi-final do-or-die game five

The Humboldt Broncos continue their uphill climb Tuesday night at the Elgar Petersen Arena as they face the Flin Flon Bombers in game five of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) semi-finals.

With some beautiful goals in game four, including some fancy stick work from captain Kade Olsen in the overtime winner, the Broncos wrapped up two games on the road to Flin Flon with a 1-1 split and are keeping the series and final contention hopes alive.

“Obviously getting those two goals and getting that lead was an important part of our win and obviously at the end, they tied up but we got a pretty resilient group there to come through and get that overtime win,” head coach Scott Barney told northeastNOW.

With the Broncos currently trailing the Bombers 1-3 in the best of seven, Barney said they will be taking the rest of the series game by game and shift by shift. The Bombers are fairly balanced, he said.

“Obviously the games have all been one-goal games so it can go either way.”

With a fairly mobile defence, Barney said they have been working on getting inside and gaining those goal opportunities.

Bronco forward Lucas Ceccarelli kicked off the scoring for the Broncos deflecting a shot from Olsen past Cal Schell.

Ceccarelli said they will be working on some minor things as they prepare for game five but nothing too serious. With it being a do or die situation, everyone is on the same giving-it-their-all page, he said.

Matthew Perkin’s second period poke in at the Bomber net was also crucial in that game four win.

Losing the puck on the attack, the rookie forward was able to take the pass from Jerzy Orchard from behind the net and sneak the puck past Schell.

Perkins said that two wins in Flin Flon would have been nice this past weekend but he knows he and the Broncos battled hard despite the 1-0 loss on Friday in game three.

While Flin Flon is closer to that fourth game win, they’ll take it one game at a time and be back in Humboldt for game seven.

For games five and seven, the Broncos will have home-ice advantage, said Perkins; hometown fans and a bigger ice surface at the EPA versus the Whitney in Flin Flon.

Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.
