New Project

New apartment specifically for elderly residents in the works for Melfort

The City of Melfort could soon be getting a new apartment building specifically for those 55 years and older.

Bridge Road Developments has been working on similar projects in rural communities across Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and northern Ontario since 2007.

This building would include 24 suites, an elevator, a common room, and a parking area.

Conal Hancherow, partner and dealing representative with KOHR Capital which oversees the investments for the project, told northeastNOW it won’t be a continuing care home, rather a space where people can live alongside others in their age group.

“There’s a sense of community in the building, the common room on the main floor will be where people go have coffee, play cards, etcetera, etcetera.”

There are several categories a community needs to fall under in order to be chosen for this type of project, including being underserved in healthcare and housing. Hancherow noted Melfort met the criteria.

The project is expected to cost under $10 million. Around 30 per cent of the funding will need to come from the community.

Hancherow said they’ve seen from other projects, specifically in Dryden, Ontario, where the community is more than eager to help financially.

“They just moved in last weekend and they’re already getting ready to break ground on their next building because demand is so high.”

Those interested in learning more about the project will have a chance to do so in person as there will be two sessions on Apr. 27th at the Kerry Vickar Centre. The first will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the second from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Once they have all the funding, the hope is to break ground sometime this fall. Through experiences from other builds, construction is expected to take between 12 and 18 months.
