Three new Broncos added to the roster for 2022-2023, two more commit to post-secondary hockey

The Humboldt Broncos are once again building up the roster for the upcoming season as they added three more names to their 2022-2023 team.

This includes a new goalie for the roster with the signing of 2004-born, Mason Lobreau.

The Brandon, Man. original helped his Brandon Wheat Kings U18 AAA to the Manitoba AAA U18 Championship Finals with a 19-2-2 record, .919 save percentage and 2.46 GAA during the regular season and a 8-3 record, a .919 save percentage and league-best 2.62 GAA during the playoffs.

Head coach Scott Barney said they have only “scratched the surface of his potential.”

“He’s a very technical goaltender who has had a great season with his club in Brandon. We’re excited to see his game continue to grow in a Broncos’ uniform.”

Lobreau will be joining the Broncos for their fall camp in August.

Two names from the spring camp also made the new roster with 2004-born forward, Keenan McNeill and 2004-born defenceman, Kaycee Coyle.

An Edmonton, Alta. product, McNeill completed his first full season for the SSCA Athletics U18 AAA with the C on his chest. In 35 games, McNeill earned himself 20 points, nine goals and 11 assists, and added another six points during four playoff games.

Barney said they are excited to have the “natural-born leader” joining their team.

“He plays a complete 200-foot game, very strong on the puck in the tough areas of the ice.”

In 38 games with the Eastman Selects U18 AAA program in Manitoba Coyle led the team in points by a defenceman with 35 points, 11 goals and 14 assists.

Barney said the Broncos get Coyle after an amazing year in Manitoba.

“His ability to skate, combined with playing a heavy game, are just two of his assets that we look forward to seeing and help developing here in Humboldt this season.”

Also announced by the Broncos are two post-secondary commitments.

Recently graduated Bronco Jerzy Orchard announced shortly after the end of the season that he will be attending Simon Frasier University of the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) for the 2022/23 season. The Delisle, Sask. forward finished his first and only season with the green and gold with 19 points, nine goals and 10 assists, in 22 games.

Rookie forward, Ethan Zielke, also recently committed to his post-secondary education and the continuation of his hockey career.

The 2003-born Calgary product will be joining the NCAA Division I Lindenwood University following the completion of his junior hockey career.

In 55 games so far with the green and gold, Zielke earned himself 36 points, nine goals and 27 assists.

The Broncos noted on their website that Zielke’s commitment is the eighth commitment for the Humboldt Broncos this season, and the third to a NCAA Division I team.
