Melfort business donates $5K to fix vandalized bench

A Melfort mechanic shop is donating $5,000 to fix a granite bench that was vandalized.

Last November, a big chunk of the bench, which was one of the main staples of the community’s Meditation Garden, had been broken into pieces.

The local Communities in Bloom was trying to think of a way to raise enough money to replace it, but instead, they got the surprise of a lifetime as Bent Wrench mechanical Ltd. decided to provide the funding.

“I’ve seen that Communities in Bloom (CiB) was trying hard to raise money, so we thought we’d just help them out,” said Jon Busby, co-owner of Bent Wrench.

After chatting with fellow co-owner, Jeff Elder, the group decided they would make the donation.

Elder noted, that financially, it was a tough decision, however, they believe they made the right choice.

“It’s going to a good cause, it’s something we believe in, and if we can give back to the community in any type of way we’ll certainly try our best with what we have.”

To say the donation came as a surprise for CiB is an understatement.

When asked by northeastNOW, CiB member Peggy George said she was overwhelmed.

“It’s not often that I’m caught off guard and made speechless… I did not see that coming.”

She added the organization does have a good budget, but most of the projects they have in the community were expected to cost between $6,000 and $7,000 this year.

The CiB didn’t provide an exact timeline on when they believe the new bench will be installed in the garden.
