Melfort Toastmasters looking for members to ‘stay alive’

May 10, 2022 | 2:00 PM

The Melfort Toastmasters are looking to remain a local club.

They’re currently recognized by the international non-profit which aims to help people with public speaking and leadership skills.

However, that could change as Margaret Andris, vice president of public relations for the local group, told northeastNOW they’ve seen a steep drop in members over the past couple of months.

“We’ve lost a lot of members due to COVID and some of them for personal reasons.”

Right now, they have nine members. Andris claims they need at least eight to be called a club.

Back in November, they had 23 members. It was at this time the club was also chartered since they reached 20 members, officially giving them recognition among Toastmasters International.

Every six months, the club is reviewed and if they don’t have 20 members they’ll lose their status.

In an attempt to attract more members, Melfort Toastmasters is holding three open houses where people can learn more about the organization’s past, the club right now, and what the future will look like if they add more members.

Andris added they plan on highlighting the benefits of being a part of the club, mainly how they can help with different communications skills such as public speaking, leading meetings, and simply answering a question when put on the spot.

“You learn a lot of things that you just take for granted.”

The first meeting takes place on May 12, the second on May 19, and the third on May 26, all starting at 7 p.m. Those interested in taking part can contact Melfort Toastmasters.

The club is also planning on holding a party on June 4 if they hit the 20-member threshold.
