Broncos McGrath receives CJHL’s Top Forward Award

May 18, 2022 | 10:42 AM

The Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) has announced Humboldt Broncos forward Connor McGrath has won the league’s Top Forward Award this season.

He won the award after leading the Broncos and the entire Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with 84 points contributing 35 goals and 49 assists.

McGrath told northeastNOW it feels really good to receive the award.

“All the other guys nominated for the award are all really good players, it could have gone anyway and it feels good to get it myself. I think I couldn’t have done it without my coaches and my teammates this year and everybody helping and putting confidence in me,” McGrath said.

The 18-year-old from LeRoy, Sask. has one more season with the Broncos until he heads to Ferris State University after receiving an NCAA Division I scholarship.

“I think we’ll have a really good group of guys again next year and I think we’ll have a strong team again and it’s going to be a lot of fun. We play in front of the best fans in the SJHL every single night so I’m really looking forward to getting back…and bringing a championship back to Humboldt next season which would be awesome,” he said.

He explained he found out he won the award after receiving a phone call from one of his coaches and said it was great to find out from him.

He received the honour after a national voting process done by each of the nine leagues in the CJHL.

Before the 2021/22 season, McGrath explained he worked on every area of his game he felt needed to be improved. As a result, he finished first in the league in points and powerplay assists, tied for first in assists, and finished tied for second in game-tying goals and third in goals.

“I put a lot of hours into getting myself into the best position possible for last season. So, that was really nice to see the effort and stuff pay off and I’m excited to put it in again this offseason and come back even better next season.”
