Summer Sizzler Fair back after two-year hiatus

Jun 8, 2022 | 5:30 PM

It’s been over two years of waiting for the City of Humboldt, since they were last able to hold their annual Summer Sizzler Fair (COVID postponement). That wait is now almost over.

The four-day event is now only a week away, as it will commence next Wednesday, June 15th and complete on Saturday, June 18th.

For the entire City of Humboldt, including communications manager Penny Lee, it’s been a long-time coming for an event that’s been truly missed, despite a huge part of it being cancelled on short notice.

“We are hearing lots of positive feedback, even though we won’t be able to have the Midway,” she said. “Our events coordinators actually planned a long list of different events, so it’s gonna be a busy three days and people are really looking forward to some new things that were never here before. It will be without the Midway, however, we’re not concerned because people are going to have a blast anyway.”

Unfortunately, the company that typically provides the midway and who was booked for 2022, cancelled on short notice due to a lack of employees. According to the company owners, they were shut down for the past 2 years due to provincial restrictions and they have been unsuccessful in refilling positions vacated during the pandemic.

Although this is a disappointment, the city’s community event coordinator for the City of Humboldt has gone above and beyond to find new activities, events and entertainment to help fill the void left by the midway. Some of these highlights include Motocross Stunt Performers, bouncy castles and inflatables, paddle boats, water walking balls, mechanical bull riding, and a duelling pianos show, just to name a few. She has also confirmed the return of community favourites, such as the parade, BBQs, a pancake breakfast, Comic-Con, and the Strong Person Competition.

Summer Sizzler Fair 2022 will take place in various locations throughout Humboldt, with some events being free, while other activities will require a wristband that can now be purchased at the Uniplex.

While this event is always a big hit for those who reside in Humboldt, it also provides a great tourism opportunity for the city and anyone who was needed an excuse to visit.

“It’s very important that we get visitors coming to Humboldt and experiencing such a fun event, but also just experiencing Humboldt in itself,” said Lee. “We do have a lot of great things that visitors can do, so maybe there are things that visitors wouldn’t even know about Humboldt until they got here, that we hope they discover and therefore, want to come back for.”
