Live shows returning to MAD on Main after two-year absence

Jun 15, 2022 | 5:10 PM

It’s been quite the long wait for those involved in MAD on Main, but thankfully, the wait is finally over.

For the first time in two years due to the pandemic, MAD on Main will be hosting their own mad production.

This Thursday and Friday, June 16 and 17, MAD on Main will be presenting ‘Quick Comedies’ desert and coffee theatre.

After going so long without hosting their own show — they co-hosted the provincial festival in conjunction with Theatre Saskatchewan last month — MAD on Main and their president Michelle Walddillig are beyond happy to be back.

“We’re very excited about it. I mean, it’s great for our actors, they’re very excited. And from what we’ve heard from some of our audience, they’re excited to get back to the Madhouse and to see some of our actors again, and just a chance to have some live theatre again.”

And for a business which relies on events to keep them going, it’s not been the easiest of times for MAD on Main. Thankfully, however, Walddillig said they’ve been able to survive, due in large part to their sponsors.

“I mean, we have our own building that we have to support and maintain, so you have to have sponsors and you have to have productions in order to be able to do that. It’s been kind of up and down over the last while, but we’ve managed and as I say, our sponsors have been really good to us. They came out full strong for theatre fest when we went around and talked to them about it and we had a very enthusiastic audience for that.”

For the actors involved, it’s been a little bit more difficult getting ‘back into shape’, one, because of the hiatus and two, because of how little time they’ve gotten to prepare.

“It is being done on a very short timeframe because we didn’t start rehearsing till just a couple of weeks back when we realized we could actually get together and do it and we had enough people to be able to put up a production,” said Walddillig. “So it’s a very sudden production.”

However, that hasn’t and won’t stop them from putting on a good show, according to her, because of the type of actors they have.

“We have a couple of our older members who have been with the group for quite a while and we have a couple of brand new people to our stage, so that’s always exciting to see. They’re all very enthusiastic about it, so it’s lovely to sort of see that kind of effort going into it.”

The plays are scheduled to be short comedies and narrative poems, with doors opening at 7 p.m. both nights and the shows starting at 7:30. Limited seating will be available and you will be seated once you arrive at the door. Tickets are $15 per person with only rush tickets available to purchase.
