Town hall on rising crime rates happening in Nipawin

Jun 23, 2022 | 4:47 PM

The Nipawin & District Chamber of Commerce is set to host a town hall to discuss crime rates.

Much like other communities in the province, the area has seen a jump in the number of crimes being committed. This includes Prince Albert and North Battleford.

Lisa Suchlandt, executive director of the regional chamber, told northeastNOW many of their members have been victims themselves.

“The business community has seen a lot of theft and vandalism over the last three, four years,” Suchlandt said.

The RCMP will be on hand to answer questions and share more about the efforts they’re taking across the community.

One topic expected to be brought up is a Citizen on Patrol (CoP) program, something the community has shown interest in the past.

Suchlandt believes it’s not just the public that wants to see this program start up.

“The police really do want to see that program go off… the more people who commit crime, the more crime they can respond to.”

The town hall will take place at Elks Hall on June 28 from 12 p.m. to 1. P.m. CST.

The Elks & Royal Purple will also be serving soup and sandwiches for $10 a person from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. CST
