Two Melfort Comets signed by Regina Thunder

Marcus Mamer and Owen Cole will continue to remain friends and teammates after high school, as they were both signed by the Regina Thunder of the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL).

The duo will add offence and defence to their new CJFL squad, this upcoming season, as Mamer sits on the defensive line as a tackle and Cole plays center on the offensive line.

Head Coach of the Melfort Comets David Rogers said he’s beyond excited for the pair to continue their football careers, especially because they get to do it together.

“I think it is important and a nice thing to see somebody that you know when you show up with a team, especially when you’re moving away from your own community, I think that will help them.”

“It’s always nice to have someone from your hometown and someone who knows you and you can kind of go hang around with as you’re getting to know other people. That brings some familiarity and helps you get accustomed to it.”

Rogers also explained how these kids have got the best out of each other and are able to have these opportunities because of their strong work ethics.

“It’s the willingness to put in the work to get that opportunity. There are a lot of kids in the province, I think not just on our team, but on all teams, who would love to play, but they are not willing to put in the work, or the means to get them to that level. They (Mamer and Cole) put the work in, in the offseason, they go to the gym, they do the running, all that stuff that gets them ready to play and that’s what helps them make teams like the Thunder.”

Rogers also mentioned that while he didn’t know exactly what they were destined for, he just knew it was more, because of not only their involvement in football but in the community, as well.

“They’re both involved in our minor football programs, so they gave back to our program by coaching every spring that we offered it. They are leaders in our program, through their actions and their behaviours, so it’s not really that surprising that they are moving on… I think that’s just a testament to the fine young men that they are becoming.”

And he was also sure to point out how he knows he and the entire community of Melfort are extremely proud of both of them and will definitely be keeping a close eye on them, especially come football season.

“I think it validates our program and the work that we demand of our players. We can point to people like Marcus Mamer and Owen Cole who have done the work and how it enabled them to get on to that next level.”

“‘I’m proud of that work that they put in to get them to where they are… and I look forward to watching them as they go through the rest of their journey and seeing how it goes for them and kind of being there to cheer them on whenever we can.”
