Melfort non-profit disappointed after property destroyed in fire

Jun 30, 2022 | 5:00 PM

A non-profit in Melfort is looking for answers after their shed caught on fire.

Plus Industries Inc. provides a cardboard recycling service for the city and one of the ways they do this is by setting up a shed where residents can dispose of their cardboard.

This building was found engulfed in flames Wednesday evening with Melfort Fire and Rescue able to quickly get the blaze under control.

Sharon Chetwynd, general manager of Plus Industries, told northeastNOW there’s no way this was an electrical fire.

“It’s just a solid, wood-built shed that people put cardboard in.”

It’s too early to say it had nothing to with the weather, but Chetwynd believes someone probably lit it on fire deliberately.

If so, this would be the second time this has happened in around four years, according to Chetwynd.

“It’s disappointing that people feel they can destroy public property and, of course, it’s a cost to us and an eye sore to the city.”

She noted it will most likely cost them around $2,500 to get a replacement up.

There’s currently no timeline on when it could happen.

“We’re gonna try our best to get it as soon as possible. We have our own woodshop so hopefully; our staff gets it done in the not too far future.”

Meanwhile, Melfort’s Fire Chief Shaun Stewart confirmed to northeastNOW that they had responded to the fire, but couldn’t say at this time whether it was started intentionally.
