The Humboldt Broncos have made a pair of announcements this week, sending one of their own to continue his hockey career elsewhere and acquiring a new player in a trade.

First off, it was Humboldt Broncos’ Captain, Kade Olsen announcing his commitment to Arizona State University (ASU), joining the Sun Devil’s American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division 1 program for the 2022/23 season.

Olsen, a 4+ year Broncos’ veteran, finishes his Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) career with 41 points (6g, 35a) and 233 penalty minutes in 161 regular-season games played, adding an additional 3 points in 19 playoff games.

The Saskatoon native culminated his Broncos tenure by being named the captain in his final year, leading the Broncos to their first Divisional title since 2012/13.

“We are extremely excited to see this commitment for Kade as he’s been a key contributor for the Broncos both on and off the ice over his whole career,” said Broncos Head Coach and GM Scott Barney. “Character, determination, leadership, accountability, and skill are only a few of many traits that best depict Kade as a human and a hockey player. He will be greatly missed but has shaped the culture of what a Bronco should be and will continue to be for years to come.”

ASU is located in Tempe, Arizona. The Sun Devils split their time between the ASU Multi-Purpose Arena and the Oceanside Ice Arena.

“I loved being in Humboldt the last four years. It was a great experience being part of such an amazing organization and community,” said Olsen. “I was lucky to meet many new friends that I’ll have forever. Humboldt will always be my second home and I can’t thank the organization enough for helping me get to where I am today. Now I’m super excited to move on to ASU to study Mechanical Engineering and play the game I love.”

Olsen’s commitment marks the 10th post-secondary commitment for the Humboldt Broncos from their 2021/22 team.

Secondly, the Broncos added a big piece to their blueline through a trade with their division rival.

They have acquired the rights to 2003-born defenseman Daylan Weigel from the Notre Dame Hounds in exchange for a Player Development Fee (PDF).

“I’m very excited to make the move and join the Humboldt Broncos and their exceptional organization to help bring a championship to the city of Humboldt,” said Weigel.

Weigel, a Warman, SK native, suited up for the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Swift Current Broncos last season, posting five points across 20 games played. Prior to making the jump to the WHL, he was the Assistant Captain for the Saskatoon Blazers U18 AAA program. There he accumulated 26 points (6g, 20a) in 42 games throughout his final full season in 2018/19.

“Adding a player like Daylan is really something to look forward to for our organization and our fans here in Humboldt. He brings an elite mix of skill and toughness to our back end which you always look for. Our fans are really going to enjoy watching him inside the EPA this season,” said Barney.

Weigel was drafted in the first round, 5th overall, in the 2018 SJHL Bantam Draft by the Notre Dame Hounds, however, never suited up for a game.

Familiarity and comradery will also be on his side when he heads to Humboldt, as he was minor-hockey teammates with current Broncos, Alec Saretzky and Brett Mirwald.
