Bringing Pride to the Northeast

North East Outreach and Support Services celebrate pride in Melfort

North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) brought Pride celebrations to the community.

With the festivities wrapped up, NEOSS is reminding everyone that celebrating who you are isn’t limited to just the month of June.

Youth program coordinator Kathryn Carswell told northeastNOW that it was the youth who spearheaded the celebrations for Melfort.

“So we got the okay from City Hall. We just walked down the sidewalk and on the walking path a little bit on Saskatchewan drive. It turned out really well,” said Carswell.

The youth hoped to have a full parade but unfortunately, they missed the deadline to bring the idea to the council for approval.

Although this year may not have worked out for the group, Carswell said there’s no telling what the future holds.

“There are rumours that the parade could happen next year. We’ll have to see what we can do. I’m not gonna rule it out. It definitely could happen.”

Carswell noticed that not only are the youth planning pride activities but some local businesses have taken steps to welcome the LGBTQ+ community.

“When I was out shopping this morning at Cindy’s independent, I noticed that she has the Pride flag on her exit and entry doors, and everyone is welcome.”

For those questioning their sexuality or gender identity, NEOSS helps direct a program called Melfort Youth Evolution that welcomes all youth who need a safe space to express themselves.

Melfort Youth Evolution members also had the chance to attend an OUTSaskatoon presentation this year.

The youth will also have a chance to attend another session later this spring with hopes of bringing education to those in the North East.
