Crime numbers drop

Nipawin RCMP vigilance proves effective as crime numbers drop

Jul 15, 2022 | 12:00 PM

Nipawin crime numbers may be down but that doesn’t mean the RCMP is slowing down when it comes to protecting the community.

At a recent town council meeting, the new RCMP recruitment program was announced in addition to the amount of crime the community has seen.

Mayor Rennie Harper told northeastNOW that the RCMP has done a great job at protecting the community.

“Our numbers in the town as far as crime are down.”

Despite the announcement of decreased numbers, Keely Grasser with Saskatchewan RCMP Media Relations explained the detachment is remaining vigilant.

“The detachment has numerous strategies in place to help prevent crime, including passing safety messaging on to the public and monitoring/checking on prolific offenders to enforce court-ordered conditions.”

Anyone who spots suspicious activity is encouraged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

“This information helps officers identify and monitor crime trends and patterns and helps them decide how to deploy resources.”

Previously the detachment released tips on how to keep yourself and your property safe from mischief, theft and break-ins. The advice included reminding people to take their keys and garage door openers indoors as well as locking doors to vehicles, sheds and homes.

The RCMP is also trying to attract potential law enforcement officers. Both experienced and new recruits are encouraged to apply for opportunities.
