Fifth annual golf tournament provides another year to remember those lost and celebrate their legacies

The fifth annual Conexus Credit Union Humboldt Broncos Memorial Golf Tournament will take place Aug. 5 and 6, as family and friends gather once again to celebrate and honour the 2017/2018 team.

The two-day event will also feature a Hunter Brothers concert on Friday night, along with the presentation of the Stanley Cup and the SJHL Hall of Fame Induction, which was originally supposed to occur, back in 2020.

Tournament co-organizer and billet mom, Laurie Warford, told northeastNOW the weekend is always looked at very fondly.

“The excitement level is through the roof right now. It’s a great gathering opportunity for families and friends and it’s no pressure. Just events where we can remember that team and have fun and create legacy awards programs.”

All funds raised from the tournament go towards creating the Humboldt Broncos Legacy Awards, which distributes money to local organizations and provide two $5,000 scholarships for local high school students who are involved in their community.

Lord Stanley will be brought to the city courtesy of Jared Bednar. He is a fellow tournament host, Broncos alumni, and head coach of the 2022 Stanley Cup champions, Colorado Avalanche.

Bednar, along with Bob Beatty, Dean Brockman, Sheldon Brookbank, Wade Brookbank, Kelly Chase, Chris Cuthbert, Curt Giles, Elgar Petersen, Brett Stewart and the 2007/08 Humboldt Broncos National Junior “A” Championship team, are the SJHL Hall Of Fame Class of 2022.

After two years of hosting this event through COVID, in which no banquet was able to occur, Warford mentioned the significance of reuniting.

“We got like close to 20 families from the 2017/18 tragedy coming, so it’s gonna be great for them to connect after a long two years,” she said. “With all the community support and our sponsors over the years, without them, we wouldn’t be able to have such a successful event.”

While both golf packages and Hunter Brothers performance tickets are sold out, there are still currently a few spots left for the SJHL Hall of Fame induction banquet. Tickets are $70 per person.

She added people are coming from far and wide for the weekend, something the community recognizes and admires.

“It means a lot to the community and to the families. We’re deeply humbled by the support that we get for this event and we’re happy to join forces with the Humboldt Broncos organizations to recognize successful hockey accomplishments that have come from the roots of Humboldt.”
