Melfort to host first-ever Household Hazardous Waste Collection day

Aug 16, 2022 | 5:38 PM

The City of Melfort has decided to hold a hazardous waste collection day in the Northern Lights Palace parking lot.

The event will mark the first-ever event the city has hosted, taking place this Saturday, August 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be a group of people waiting to sort and organize what citizens bring before it’s properly disposed of.

Community services director, Rob Lok, told northeastNOW it provides the opportunity to eliminate negative environmental impacts.

“This is how you contribute to a sustainable community. Dumping things like this down the drain, or just putting it into the general garbage so it goes into our landfill, those aren’t sustainable ways of disposing of things.”

“By dropping it off and having it properly labelled, we can send it to its proper home where it’s either recycled or disposed of properly and be on that end of life cycle pathway.”

Should something not be labelled properly, the city would then be unable to accept it, as they would not know where to send it to have it dealt with in the right matter.

Lok also mentioned another benefit of an event like this is education and socialization.

“When we do this in a public location, like the one we’re doing on Saturday, there’s a bit of outreach there and there’s an opportunity for a bit of education. It’s also a little bit of a feel-good moment.”

Also with a public event like this one, it provides more incentive, according to Lok. Some things may sit in houses, garages or sheds when people don’t know what to do with it or where to send it.

The hope is that this event makes it as easy as possible for residents to dispose of waste and gives them the opportunity to do so in a timely fashion.

“It’s going to be relatively easy on a Saturday for you to load up your vehicle and bring down these old products, drop them off, somebody’s going to be there to take them off your hands and then you’re done,” he said. “There’s a little bit of an element to that.

The full list of what is accepted and any other additional information you may need, can be found on the city’s website.

Green For Life (GFL) is aiding the city with this event, as they have done with many other municipalities across the province and the country.

Lok mentioned should Saturday receive positive feedback, that this event could be pushed into much earlier in the season, next year, as a sort of timely ‘spring cleaning day’.
