222’s Master’s Fastpitch three-peats as National Champions

The 222’s Master’s Fastpitch team has created a dynasty after winning their third gold medal in as many tries.

The group was in Newfoundland over the September long weekend and achieved the three-peat by beating the host team 5-2 in the National Championship game.

Team Member Keith Mackintosh told northeastNOW this year’s success felt a little different after having not competed in so long.

“The cool part about this national was that it was the first time that many of us had kind of gotten together again with teams from across the country… it was a little bit special because we could get back out there and compete.”

This year marked the first time since 2019 that Softball Canada was able to hold any sort of national championships.

Mackintosh explained a hiatus like that presented challenges for the club, however, when it came to repeating a winning formula, what led it all was their chemistry.

“I think the number one thing is we just were able to put together a group of guys that we’re all buddies and a lot of guys have played at a high level. We just got a bunch of guys who like playing together and having a good time.”

And according to Mackintosh, that’s been the carried tradition of the program.

He said in its entire history, at least one of the 222’s male teams has played in every national championship.

“It’s just it’s kind of a testament to our passionate love for the game,” said Mackintosh. “As soon as we stepped between the lines, there’s still that pride and desire to win and play well and compete. I think as long as that’s there, we’ll continue to go.”

The men are set to compete in Surrey, British Columbia for the 2023 National Title, as they aim to extend their dynasty and make it four gold medal’s in a row.

Mackintosh added it was a huge accomplishment to win three in a row and now the quest is on for the next.

“The three-peat is a big deal for us and now we’ll just kind of move forward. We’ll see what happens and see if a bunch of old guys can still keep it rolling for a fourth. It’s always great to compete with those guys and everybody is committed to doing it again next year. As long as the compete level is there and guys still want to go, we’ll keep showing up.”
