Local student representing Horizon School Division on provincial youth council

Elected as a local ambassador, Grade 11 student Anna Ingram will share her insights and help shape the future of Saskatchewan’s education system on this year’s provincial youth council.

The Quill Lake School student will represent Horizon School Division as one of 12 Grade 10-12 students on the provincial council, which provides its insights to the Ministry of Education.

Ingram told northeastNOW she was a bit nervous when she found out she was elected, however, she knows this experience will serve her well in her future.

“I was very excited and very scared all at the same time. I knew it can be a very good experience, so I was excited,” she said.

Ingram already made a back-to-school video as part of the back-to-school campaign which featured what kids are excited about for this year.

She explained it’s not an easy job to represent her school division, although it’s one she believes she can conquer.

“It’s a lot of responsibility and it will be a lot of pressure, but I feel like I’ll be able to do it and that I can voice what everyone feels like, what they need,” she said.

Included in that responsibility will be the opportunity to voice her opinions on school improvements, such as changes to the curriculum.

Ingram said she hopes everyone feels well represented by her involvement in this council.

“I hope that I’ll be able to do it and make sure everyone’s voices are heard. I’m very excited to see [how it goes], I mean it’s gonna be lots of fun and give me a lot of experiences,” she said.

With the council just starting its year-long term, there are still lots of campaigns and much else to look forward to.

She explained with experiencing her first campaign she hopes the nerves have worn off and she can just have some fun with it.

“It was a lot of fun and I got to be very creative with it. It was an experience where I was very nervous at first and then once I realized that it’s just for fun, I had a lot more fun with it and it was a lot easier,” she said.

Ingram isn’t the only one who is happy to create better education opportunities across the province.

Education Minister Dustin Duncan said he shares those emotions, in a press release sent to northeastNOW.

“I’m pleased to have these young ambassadors welcome students back to class and want to congratulate them for taking an active role in ensuring this school year is the best yet. By sharing their voices, this year’s members will have the opportunity to help ensure students in our province experience success in the coming year,” he said.
