Forget About That One

Mustangs fall to 1-2 after lackluster performance at home

Sep 24, 2022 | 8:48 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are now 1-2-0-0 on the SJHL regular season after a 7-4 loss to the Humboldt Broncos on Friday night at the Northern Lights Palace.

Melfort fell behind 2-0 early, but was able to recover and get things to 2-0, but that was as close as they’d get all night. Humboldt would add two more before the end of the period, and the teams would trade markers the rest of the way.

Defenceman Leith Olafson had a goal and an assist for the Mustangs in the contest and said they were soft on pucks all night at leaving Broncos open all over the ice.

“All seven of their goals were scored within ten feet of the net,” Olafson said. “So it’s just kind of embarrassing.”

Leyton Holoien, Wyatt Day, and Dawson Leroux all scored for Melfort in the contest. Joel Favreau began the night in net, but let in four goals on ten shots and was pulled after the first period. Jackson Fellner stepped in after that and stopped 13 of 16 the rest of the way.

Fortunately for the Mustangs, they are back at it again on Saturday night, in Humboldt.

“I think we can forget about this one after tonight, let it sting for a bit, but then come back tomorrow even harder,” Olafson said.

Humboldt improves to 2-0-0-0 on the season and had seven different goal scorers in the game.

Saturday’s game can be heard on 105 CJVR, and cjvr.com with Mat Barret starting at 7:15 p.m. with the pre-game show.
