Mustangs respond against Broncos, fall in Overtime

Sep 25, 2022 | 9:01 AM

After a disappointing performance on Friday night on home ice, the Mustangs gave a pretty solid response on Saturday in Humboldt as they took on the Broncos.

However, it did ultimately result in a 3-2 overtime loss for the Mustangs, it was a much better effort than the 7-4 loss the night prior.

Humboldt got on the board early in this one, just five minutes into the game as Jace Benvie scored his third of the season. Things would stay that way until halfway through the third period, when right on cue, 16-year-old Riley Ashe scored his first career SJHL goal to tie things up 1-1 for the Mustangs.

That Ashe goal was answered by the Broncos as the home club would get a goal from Noah Barlage with just under five minutes to play to regain the lead. That didn’t last long though as the Mustangs powerplay would finally strike on their sixth opportunity of the night as Leith Olafson continued his stretch of excellent play with his third goal in as many games. The goal made things 2-2, and led us to overtime.

Mustangs Assistant Coach Dan Meyers says the fight and resiliency from the team was nice to see.

“We came out and started putting pucks on net,” Meyers said. “Everybody was working hard in the third period.”

In overtime, with a minute gone in the frame, Ethan Zielke was able to deke past the aforementioned Olafson and roof a backhand by Joel Favreau for the game winner.

While the game did end in a loss for the Mustangs, Meyers says there’s growth that comes from a game like this.

“It’s good to see that the boys didn’t give up, and we kept coming at them,” he said. “And it was a good confidence builder for some of the guys for sure.”

Melfort falls to 1-2-1-0 on the season while Humboldt improves to 3-0-0-0. Next up for Melfort is the Warman Showcase on Tuesday and Wednesday in Warman.
