Late goal earns Hawks a point in overtime loss

The Nipawin Hawks managed to snag a point in Friday’s overtime loss to Notre Dame by the score of 4-3.

Back on home ice for the first time since Sept. 21 the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club was looking for back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Notre Dame had other ideas opening the scoring early in the first period and carrying that lead in the second. Carson Dobson scored two goals just over 90 seconds apart giving the home team a 2-1 lead.

The Hounds responded and retook the lead 3-2 before the second period ended.

Nipawin was able to score the tying goal late in the third off the stick of Alex Ochitwa. The 20-year-old said the team wasn’t overly pleased with the result.

“Definitely would have liked a little better effort tonight, a full 60 minutes would have been nice,” Ochitwa said after the game. “We had our moments, and it was nice to get a point.”

Overtime didn’t last long; Jared Sych beat Nolan McDowell 30 seconds into overtime giving the Hounds the win. As for Ochitwa, he hopes reaching the scoresheet gives his season a jump start.

“It was nice to get the first one, it’s definitely a confidence booster. I haven’t played the best since I’ve been here, and I am trying to find my game. I think this is a step in the right direction tonight,” he said.

The Hawks will have a chance to salvage their weekend on Saturday in Flin Flon. The Hawks beat the Bombers at home earlier this season and will look to make it two straight over their Sher-Wood Division rivals.

“Absolutely, we’re excited to get back on the road tomorrow, go to Flin Flon and get two points,” Ochitwa concluded.

The game will be broadcasted on Beach Radio beginning with the pregame show at 6:15 p.m. Face off is 6:30 p.m.
