Mustangs fall in overtime to Millionaires in goaltender duel

Oct 5, 2022 | 2:40 PM

The Melfort Mustangs have lost another game in overtime, their third of the young SJHL season.

This one came at the hands of the Melville Millionaires in Melville on Tuesday night, it what was a low-scoring affair ending in a 2-1 final.

Dawson Leroux got the Mustangs on the board with less than a minute to play in the first period, and while they had the lead through 2 periods, Mustangs Assistant Coach Dan Meyers said he doesn’t think they were that good.

“I don’t even think our first two periods were that good,” Meyers said. “We just didn’t come out with 100-percent effort all the way through. I thought maybe the last ten minutes in the second period we had some game, but then we lost it in the third.”

Melfort had outshot the Millionaires 18-13 through two periods, but in the third, the Millionaires came out firing to the tune of a 17-6 shot margin and scoring with just over six minutes to play. Noah wills was the goal scorer, inching himself closer to the SJHL’s league lead in points, just one behind the lead now.

That would force overtime where the Mustangs began the extra frame shorthanded, leading to some early pressure in overtime from Melville. And just as the penalty expired, the Mustangs were unable to corral a rebound that trickled to the stick of Nathan Fox for the overtime-winning goal.

With another inconsistent effort hurting the Mustangs, Meyers said the best way to get through it is to get back to work.

“I think we get on the bus, and at 9:30 tomorrow morning, we’re back on the ice,” he said.

Joel Favreau was stellar once again in the contest stopping 32 of 34 that came his way for Melfort.

The Mustangs are back at it on Friday night in La Ronge to take on the Ice Wolves.
