Radloff scores first SJHL goal in Hawks win

The Nipawin Hawks earned some redemption in Wilcox Wednesday night handing the Hounds a loss in their home rink, just like Notre Dame did to Nipawin on Sept. 30.

Hawks’ forward Maguire Ratzlaff led the offensive attack with a pair of goals, but the highlight of the night was Nipawin rookie Finley Radloff scoring his first career Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) goal in the second period. The 17-year-old said after the game the win was a solid one for the group searching for some consistency.

“It was good, I think we played a full 60 minutes, hemmed them in their own zone, I think everything was going our way,” he said.

Hawks’ Alex Ochitwa opened the scoring just over a minute into the game with his second of the year. The 20-year-old Prince George product and first-year Hawk was able to score in front of his family that flew into Regina from Northern British Columbia to watch.

Notre Dame tied the score just under three minutes later, but Ratzlaff scored at the 13:27 mark to break the tie. Then Nipawin’s captain bounced one past Notre Dame netminder Ashton Billesberger with just four seconds left in the first period that turned out to be the game-winning goal.

The Hounds closed the gap to one again in the second period on Sam Kroon’s second goal of the game, but Radloff was able to restore Nipawin’s two-goal cushion halfway through the second period after taking a pass from Tre Fouquette and scoring on a breakaway.

“Deking hasn’t been going too unreal right now, so wanted to shoot and maybe get a rebound if it popped out in front, but I really didn’t need that,” Radloff said.

Radloff started his minor hockey in La Ronge but has called Nipawin home for nearly the last decade. After playing a handful of games for the Hawks last season following his days with the Tisdale Trojans, Radloff said getting his first goal was a moment he won’t forget.

“Yeah probably,” he said. “To get that first one under my belt. It’s nice to know I can score in this league and hopefully I get many more.”

The Hawks continue their southern road swing in Weyburn on Thursday. Faceoff is 7 p.m. from Crescent Point Place, and the pregame show ahead of Rona Nipawin Hawks Hockey on Beach Radio will begin at 6:45 p.m.
