Mustangs blown out in La Ronge by Ice Wolves

Oct 8, 2022 | 9:15 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have fallen to 3-4-3-0 on the SJHL season after a 7-2 loss to the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday night.

It was certainly not a banner effort by the Mustangs, but they did open the scoring in this one just a minute in as Hayden Tuba ripped one past Ice Wolf netminder Dawson Smith. La Ronge quickly responded to tie the game up thanks to Ethan Strik, but Melfort would take the lead back after a Jacob Hufty shorthanded goal.

However, it was after that where things went south fast for the Mustangs. Ryley Morgan scored twice in the frame, while Thomas Wright added another to make it 4-2 after one.

Nobody put one on the board in the second, but the Mustangs did get a few chances thanks to a few powerplays but had nothing to show for it.

Meanwhile, in the third, the Ice Wolves put the pedal down and didn’t look back as Trenton Curtis, Sage Roberts, and Walker Jerome all scored to put the final nail in the coffin.

Melfort was 0/7 on the powerplay on the evening and only fired 24 shots toward Smith in the game.

The Mustangs will host Estevan on Saturday in Melfort.
