Assisted living for seniors sought for Nipawin

A group of seniors in Nipawin has asked the town to help with setting up assisted living facilities for seniors. At Tuesday’s council meeting, councillors heard there is a need that is not being met.

“We have made contact with many Nipawin residents who agree Nipawin is definitely in need of such a facility,” the group’s letter to council states. “Most are overwhelmed by being forced to move to a different town or city in order to receive the assistance they require…they are separated from family and friends, and their health deteriorates more quickly.”

Nipawin has Pineview Lodge for people who need more intensive care, but no assisted living for those who can mostly look after themselves.

However, Mayor Rennie Harper said the town has been pursuing options since at least 2017.

“We will continue to look into assisted living,” she said in an interview with northeastNOW. “We know that it’s a need.”

Harper explained the town has looked at various options over the years, including bringing in private developers, but so far nothing has worked out.

“We’ll reach out to the ministry…to see where it goes, and we will reach out to the housing authority to see what opportunities are there,” she said.

Harper added housing is not something that the town has direct responsibility for, but they are definitely willing to do what they can.

“Council has met with the housing authority, and we’ve met with various ministers as they’ve changed across the years, to try and see what we can have happen,” said Harper.
