Mustangs head west for road swing looking for identity

Oct 14, 2022 | 9:42 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are on the road for a pair of games this weekend looking to break their losing skid.

Melfort has lost four games in a row and currently holds a 3-5-4-0 record. They haven’t won back-to-back games yet this season, but have also not lost back-to-back games in regulation either with a number of overtime losses scattering their record.

Mustangs captain Ben Tkachuk says throughout their few days at practice, they’ve sorted out a few things and worked hard as they try and work through this tough stretch. He says they need to find their identity.

“Since I’ve been here, it’s been just hard defensive, hard to play against hockey,” Tkachuk said. “So, I think we’re going to try and get back towards that, and play with some confidence and play for one another and go out there and battle every shift.”

The Mustangs will start their road swing on Friday night in Battlefords for a meeting with the undefeated North Stars who have won 10 straight to start the year including 2-0, and 5-4 wins over the Mustangs.

Tkachuk said they’ve been right there with the Stars this season, losing a game in overtime, and skating with them in the 2-0 game that ended with an empty net goal.

“Just have to go out there and play with speed as we have in the past,” he said. “Hopefully stay disciplined in their barn, stay level-headed, go out there and play hard defensive hockey and take our chances when we get them.”

Tkachuk wasn’t in the lineup for either meeting with the Stars as he was dealing with an injury, but he did just return on Tuesday against Notre Dame. The Mustangs are expected to be fully healthy for the weekend swing.

The Kindersley Klippers will be on tap for Saturday night. It’ll be the first meeting of the season between the two clubs. Kindersley is 1-5-0-2 heading into the weekend.
