Hudson Bay looking for new Mayor

The town of Hudson Bay in the province’s northeast is looking for a new mayor.

Mayor Glenn McCaffery retired at the end of September.

“He resigned basically due to family reasons, personal reasons,” returning officer Teresa Parkman, who is also the town’s chief administrative officer, said.

In a post on the town’s Facebook page, McCaffery said: “After 12 years of service, the last six as your mayor, it is with sadness that I advise you of my retirement.”

“I want to share a huge thank you to the community of Hudson Bay from Shirley and I for the support you have shown us over the past six years.”

It means Hudson Bay may need a byelection for a new mayor. Nominations opened on October 6, and will stay open until 4 p.m. on Oct. 26.

Parkman said so far, town councillor Betty Lou Palko has submitted nomination papers for the mayor’s job. Parkman said if no one else submits their papers, Palko will be elected by acclamation.

However, if there is a challenger, the town will need to hold a byelection to decide the winner.

“Then we will have an election on Nov. 30,” Parkman said.

She added if Palko wins the election, a second byelection would have to be held to fill the council seat she would vacate.

Hudson Bay has six town councillors and a mayor.

Province-wide municipal elections are scheduled for the fall of 2024, so whomever becomes the town’s new mayor will hold the job for two years before the next election.

Hudson Bay is a town of about 1,400 people. Its main industries are forestry, agriculture and tourism.
