Melfort Food Bank holding drive for canned food

The Melfort Food Bank is holding a drive for canned food on Saturday, October 22.

Secretary Ellen Zuck said they are running low of a variety of canned goods.

“Our shelves are getting pretty bare with the canned goods, and we use canned goods in our hampers all the time,” Zuck said. “We’re really low on canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned meat and canned milk, and we’re quite short of pork and beans. Pork and beans is a staple in all our hampers,” she said.

Zuck said volunteers, including the Melfort Mustangs, are dropping off paper bags to every household in the city. The hope is that people will put canned food in the bags, and leave it out for volunteers to pick up on Saturday morning. They’re asking people to leave the bags on their doorstep, or driveway, or in a visible location on their lawns.

“I do need some volunteers for Saturday. Saturday is very simple, you just have to drive up and down the streets and if there’s a bag out there you pick it up. You dont have to talk to anybody, or knock on doors,” she said.

Zuck said the Food Bank has seen demand for food rising significantly in recent months.

“Some people just need a hand before payday, and we’re getting lots of new clients,” she said. “People we’ve never seen here before, so there is a struggle out there.”

She is hoping people in Melfort will respond in a big way.

“I would like to challenge the City of Melfort residents. We would like to collect one can for every resident in Melfort on Saturday,” Zuck said. “Tell your friends, family and neighbours.”
