A total of three local organizations will see their programming boosted courtesy of Canada Post and their Community Foundation grant.

Yellow Quill First Nation, the Tisdale Twisters Gymnastics Club, and the Saskatchewan Music Educators Association (Cudworth) have all received at least $6,000.

Yellow Quill First Nation: Randall Kehrig, the living-well coordinator at the Yellow Quill Health Centre, told northeastNOW they were ecstatic about the initiative the local Canada Post puts towards the community.

“Super happy, it’s excellent to know that the community Canada Post takes an interest. Really good to work with large organizations that want to make a difference.”

The $11,000 will go towards the Yellow Quill Health Centre and fund a series of four seminars called Respect Sexual Health. The seminars will aim to raise awareness of sexually transmitted diseases and the importance of being regularly tested.

“Most of our funds will be spent delivering programming to students in the school teaching about STIs, safe sex, and getting tested. This is really important because, at the moment, we have Syphilis running quite wild and other STIs that are present.”

Tisdale Twisters Gymnastics Club: The Tisdale Twisters Gymnastics Club has been given $6,000.

Erin DeLaet, organization president explained they were surprised when they found out they were chosen.

“Just to have been selected, I think we were kind of shocked, and then the amount of money, that was even more surprising and more shocking, it was more than we would have ever expected.”

The funds will help replace worn-out equipment, which is an “ongoing issue”. It will also help train their coaches, so they can maintain and earn new certifications, as they keep it safe for the children.

DeLaet explained the local post office was grateful their money was going to a local program.

“They’re the ones that actually do the fundraiser and I guess they hold special days and they make donations, so we’re very appreciative and they were very excited for us.”

Saskatchewan Music Educators Association: The Saskatchewan Music Educators Association (SMEA), based out of Cudworth, is receiving a total of $15,000 to expand its programming all across the province.

SMEA president Katlyn Redding mentioned this will help deliver what they have to offer, specifically in small towns.

“We could expand our brand new summer outreach program that brings music to senior citizens and pre-K/preschool kids, where there’s not a lot of music available in their centers.”

SMEA is an eligible culture organization and a nonprofit group that works with the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation (STF) and many other organizations to bring quality music education to the province, support the teachers who are within our schools, and additionally work within the community to support initiatives such as the northern music camps.

Canada Post: The Canada Post Community Foundation informed 101 organizations across the country that they will receive a grant to support their efforts to improve the lives of Canadian children and youth.

A total of $1.3 million in grants has been awarded for this year and the recipients included grassroots organizations from every province and territory.
