Mustangs make it three wins in a row after dominating performance over Red Wings

Oct 27, 2022 | 10:28 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have now won three games in a row, after a 4-2 victory over the visiting Weyburn Red Wings at the Northern Lights Palace on Wednesday.

The Mustangs dominated the game on the shot clock, outshooting the Red Wings 47-12, nearly quadrupling the Red Wings total.

However, on the scoreboard, it was a different story for the first two periods as Matteo Turrin’s first as a Red Wings made it 1-0 Wings after one period. Logan Belton’s first career SJHL goal would make it 1-1, but that only lasted a minute as Mi-Kwan Tallman would make it 2-1 Weyburn after 2 periods.

Melfort was outshooting Weyburn 29-8 through two periods, and Mustang forward Clarke Huxley says there was some frustration building.

“We’re putting up the shots and it’s not going in,” he said. “But just stay calm and trust our process and know it’s going to work out in the end.

In the third though, it was all Melfort Mustangs as Ryan Duguay stayed hot, scoring his third goal in as many games. Huxley would give the Mustangs their first lead of the game, and then Ben Tkachuk would notch his first goal of the year firing one into the Weyburn open cage with just minutes to play.

Huxley added in the third period they started playing with just a bit more urgency.

“Playing with jam we needed,” Huxley said. “We were playing good in the first and second I thought, but we just brought that ‘we need this’ attitude in the third, so we got it done.”

The Mustangs improve to 7-6-4-0 on the season, their first time over .500 this season. They’ll visit La Ronge on Saturday night.
