Police charge man with impaired driving causing death after pedestrian killed

One person is dead following a vehicle-pedestrian collision as police continue to investigate that case along with several other unrelated stolen vehicle files.

Carrot River/Red Earth Cree Nation: Carrot River RCMP responded to a vehicle-pedestrian collision on Red Earth Cree Nation, back on Oct. 30, at about 3 a.m.

Officers located an injured 36-year-old female, from Red Earth Cree Nation, who was later pronounced dead at the scene, by EMS. Her family has been notified.

The vehicle involved left the scene prior to police arrival, however, the driver was located and arrested at a residence on Red Earth Cree Nation approximately 4 hours later.

Thirty-four-year-old Miller Nawankayas is charged with one count, operation of vehicle while impaired causing death, and one count, failure to stop at accident resulting in death.

He will appear in Melfort Provincial Court on Nov. 3.

The following are some other criminal cases investigated in neighbouring areas.

Big River/Wakaw/Melfort: Back on Oct. 26, at about 4:30 p.m., Big River RCMP received a report of a stolen SUV travelling on Highway 55, south of town.

After officers located and stopped it, an investigation determined the truck was reported stolen and the attached licence plate did not match.

A pick-up that was reported stolen in Melfort on Oct. 21 was also found abandoned near the scene.

As a result, 31-year-old Sherry Sayazie from Melfort was arrested, after officers also located about eight grams of methamphetamine in her sleeve and some keys, cheques, identification and bank cards in the vehicle, some of which had been reported stolen from a Wakaw business on Oct. 24.

She is charged with: one count, theft of sports utility vehicle, two counts, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, one count, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and one count, possession (methamphetamine).

She appeared in Prince Albert Provincial Court on October 31.

Nipawin: Around 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 27, Nipawin RCMP received a report of a stolen vehicle. Officers immediately responded and shortly after, located it.

They obtained a warrant to enter a residence and arrested 28-year-old Nathaniel Crate.

Further investigation determined he also previously assaulted two individuals, back on Oct. 12.

He is charged with: one count, assault, one count, assault with a weapon, one count, fail to comply with a release order, and one count of theft of a motor vehicle.

He was scheduled to appear in Nipawin Provincial Court on Oct. 31.

Other: RCMP also responded to a multi-vehicle collision near Humboldt, a drug bust in Melfort/Kinistino, and a homemade explosive device in Tisdale.
