Mustangs name October players of the month

The Melfort Mustangs played 11 games in the month of October, posting a 5-4-2-0 record in 11 games.

The Stangs were able to stay in the battle, called the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) standings, thanks in large part to consistent and critical contributions from three of their players.

1st Star – (11gp, 5G, 4A, 9Pts)

Hometown product, Zac Somers turned red hot in October, finding the back of the net a total of five times, the most on the team in the month. This came after having scored just once, in what was a half-month of play in September.

He would also add four assists for a total of nine points in 11 games.

His stellar month of October included two multi-goal games and a stretch of eight points over three games.

The 18-year-old forward currently sits second on the team with 13 points overall.

2nd Star – (11gp, 3G, 7A, 10 Pts)

As the new kid on the block, Riley Ashe has adjusted to the SJHL quite well in his first season of play.

The 16-year-old really turned up the dial in October, starting it all off with two goals and an assist on the first night of the month, against Notre Dame. That helped cap off a rookie of the week campaign for him.

The Warman product ultimately tallied three goals and seven assists this past month, tying for the team lead in assists and leading the team in points over that stretch.

Ashe had two three-point nights in October and is currently tied for second in SJHL rookie scoring.

3rd Star – (10gp, 2G, 7A, 9 Pts)

The lone 20-year-old for this month’s Three Stars was Hayden Tuba, who led the way on the Mustang blue line in October.

The South Delta, B.C. product had a four-point night to begin the month and would go on to tally two goals and seven assists overall in October.

He was the leading scorer among defencemen on the club, in October and at the end of the month, sat fifth among SJHL defencemen in points-per-game (0.85).

Meanwhile, Melfort has now flipped its calendar over to November, having started off with a 2-1 loss to the visiting Flin Flon Bombers.

Only three Mustangs registered a point, which included Aidan Wildeman and David Rioux assist on a goal scored by Jacob Hufty.
