Mustangs dominate Bruins for seocnd-straight win in Estevan

Nov 13, 2022 | 9:10 AM

It was another convincing win for the Melfort Mustangs on Saturday, Nov. 12 as they wrapped up their two-game set in Estevan with a 6-1 win over the Bruins.

This one saw some similarities to game one on Friday which saw the Mustangs jump out to a big lead through one period, but this one was done a bit differently. Boston Maxwell scored on the powerplay for the Mustangs to make it 1-0 6:17 into the hockey game. However, a five-minute major slashing penalty to Leyton Holoien put the Mustangs on a lengthy penalty kill.

They’d get through the five minutes unscathed, and Mustangs Head Coach and General Manager Trevor Blevins said that kill was a big character moment.

“What can you say as a coach when you watch every player sacrifice themselves, and block shots,” he said. “And just the effort in that situation was just huge by everyone.”

Shortly after the penalty had expired, Melfort jumped right back on the offensive as Dawson Leroux scored on the powerplay, and Ryan Duguay and Zac Somers would score at even strength afterward. All three of those goals were separated by just a 1:45 on the clock, giving Melfort the 4-0 lead after one.

Logan Belton’s second goal of the year would make it 5-0 after two periods as Melfort locked things down defensively. Alex Blanchard got one back early in the third for Estevan as they pulled their goalie on an early powerplay, but that’s as close as the Bruins would get in this one.

Blevins said the weekend wins are a big confidence builder for the team moving forward, especially after not finding offence as easily just a few weeks ago.

“Really, the character of this group shone through this weekend,” Blevins said. “It’s too bad it wasn’t at home, when you see these kind of results. But it was a gutsy effort against a tough team, five hours away, and just getting it done.”

Melfort improves to 9-8-4-0 on the season and will return to action on Wednesday when they host the Weyburn Red Wings.
